Dolphins

Tara Rose

They are closely related to whales and porpoises, they are found worldwide, and are carnivores eating mainly squid and fish. I am talking about the Dolphin. These amazing creatures vary in size from 1.2m and 40kg (Maui ’s Dolphin) to 9.5m (30 ft) 10 tonnes. They mostly live in the shallower seas of the continental shelves. Dolphins evolved about ten million years ago! Dolphins are considered to be amongst the most intelligent of animals and their often-friendly appearance and seemingly playful attitude have made them popular in human culture. There are many species of Dolphin; among them is the Bottle Nose Dolphin, the Commerson’s Dolphin, the Dusky Dolphin, the Common Dolphin, the Spotted Dolphin, the Boto- or Amazon River Dolphin. And the Killer Whale!

Dolphins are wonderful animals. Like all animals and insects, they play a large part in our eco system.

Crafts

Eva Marlie

Crafts can be a delight. They keep you busy on cold, rainy days and if you pick the right kind of craft you could have a hobby for life. There are so many different crafts; you are sure to find something you really enjoy. There’s the kind of craft where you get really messy, for outdoorsy types. These include gluing, tie-dying and painting. Then there’s the opposite, for people who like making the most of their time inside, and who are good with their hands: beading, drawing, sketching, and scoubidous. There’s also the type which includes knitting, sewing, embroidery and crocheting. Some would also say cooking is a type of craft. I find if you have nothing to do and you’re sitting at home bored, then you should definitely consider doing something with your hands.

For each issue of Free Range I will tell you a bit more about one specific craft. The craft I have chosen for this issue is how to make I Spy Bottles. They are a great gift you can make in a hurry if you have the right materials.
I SPY BOTTLES

You will need:

1 plastic bottle or jar with large mouth, screw on lid, and with the sticker off

6 - 14 charms (these could be small plastic toys, beads or other trinkets)

2-3 cups rice

Glue

Scrap paper

Pencil

Coloured card

Small length of ribbon

Hole-punch

Picture taken by Xocibiki

Method:

1. Get bottle/jar ready by making sure it is clean and dry inside, and out.

2. Decide which charms and other items to go in bottle.

3. Write down the ones you chose on a piece of scrap paper. Don’t think you’ll remember, because you won’t!

4. Fill bottle a third of the way with rice – add some charms/items, while ticking them off on the piece of paper.

5. Fill up to halfway and add more charms/items.

6. Fill up to about 3cm from top.

7. Check list to see if you’ve added all the charms before sealing your bottle.

8. Make sure the bottle is completely dry, otherwise the rice could germinate in the bottle.

9. Spread a THIN layer of glue around outside of top of bottle (on screw-top lines) and leave for a few minutes.

10. Screw top tightly onto bottle and leave to set.

Star (12)

A tall man with jet black hair, black clothes (apart from the white shirt showing underneath his blazer) and dark brown eyes is standing on a river bank holding the hand of a small girl with black shoes, a blue dress and a purple bow in her light brown hair. Her eyes, sparkling blue like the water in a clear bay, looks up at the tall man and says "Father?"

"Yes, my daughter", responds the man.

"May I have...?" She looks uncertain.

"Yes, my daughter. State it and you shall have it", he says.

"A book, father. I want a book."

"A book?" The father exclaims in an unbelieving tone.

"Yes, father, I want a book."

"Why would you want a book?" the father asks.

"Because a book is wonderful to read, father!" says his daughter.

"But you have so many wonderful things at your disposal! Scientists, astronomers, resources beyond belief! You could have people sent to Mars, research done to cross to other worlds, have a holiday on Mars and so much more just by saying it. But why would you want simple little books?"

"So that I can have an adventure without going anywhere, father. So that I can be in a world with technologies which are only being researched without waiting and, most of all, so that I can go to other worlds and be someone else. So, oh please, father, may I have a book?"

The father thinks a little then says: "I understand now, my daughter. I understand. Yes, of course you may have a book." He smiles at her and they walk away along the bank of the river.

Recipes

Vegan Cake

Compiled by Sue D Nim

3 cups of plain flour (white/wholemeal/mix)
1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons bicarb soda
2 cups water (or juice)
1 cup oil
2 tablespoons vinegar (wine/apple cider)
1 tablespoon vanilla essence

Some optional extras (mix and match for many variations):
1 - 2 cups shredded coconut
1/2 cup cocoa or carob powder
2 cups pear/apple/plums cooked or canned (if canned, use the juice instead of some water)

Pre-heat oven to 160˚C. Mix dry ingredients in large bowl. Add wet ingredients. Mix together. Pour into an oiled cake tin (ring tin works well). If baked in a ring tin, bake for about 30 -40 mins. It takes about 60 mins if a round or square tin is used. Wait till cooled before turning out, otherwise it tends to fall apart (still tastes good though). Tastes nice served with a drop of Woollies organic coconut cream. Other coconut creams just don't seem to work (for me).

Movie Review

Eva Marlie

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs

In this family movie Sid (sloth), Manny and Ellie (mammoths), Crash and Eddie (possums), and Buckminster (a weasel the others meet during their adventure), experience things they never before would have thought could be real.

The mammoths Manny and Ellie are about have their first baby and Diego, the sabre tooth, even decides to leave the herd so they can get on with their own life. In the meantime Sid the sloth tries to adopt three supposedly abandoned eggs his size, and the next morning they hatch into something unexpected. Scrat the squirrel meets another someone special who tries to steal his precious acorn. But don’t get your hopes up; for Scrat things are never simple.

People of all ages will enjoy this family comedy animation, with its quirky comments and imaginative characters.

Rated PG.

Practicing the Piano
Granny Jo

www.answers.yahoo.com

Approaching the bench
For a pleasure filled hour
And sitting lightly
Before the keyboard
The pianist caresses the yellowed keys

Comforting, the feel of ivory
Beneath fingertips of sensitive flesh
Fingertips, that tiptoe across the Keyboard
Like a ballerina would glide on tiptoe
Across a stage

Now a high tone...now a low tone...
Now the two together fall on the ear
The pressure on the keys
Giving delightful expression
To the feelings of the innermost soul

Hope is the Thing with Feathers

Emily Dickinson

"Hope" is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul

And sings the tune without the words

And never stops at all.

And sweetest in the gale is heard

And sore must be the storm

That could abash the little bird

That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chilliest land

And on the strangest sea,

Yet never, in extremity,

It asked a crumb of me.

D I Y time!

Has your much loved jeans had their day, but you still can’t bear to throw them away? Well we’ve found an answer… turn them into cut-off denim shorts! All you need to do is grab your scissors and cut the legs of 6 inches below the zipper. Wash them inside out so the ends fray nicely to give the shorts a cute distressed look. Voila! You have breathed new life into an old favourite.

For lashes that will definitely get you noticed use Define-a-Lash from Maybelline, now in waterproof. I use it myself and it works a treat.
