Issue 8 - Tuesday, 2nd March 2010

Hi everyone

I am very sorry to say that Free Range no longer has Tara to help!! This means the gemstone articles and A Story Within A Story may not be able to continue. Please tell me if you want them still to be published and I'm sure it can be arranged.

This issue might be a little (quite a lot) shorter (again!), though it will pick up soon :)

I will be advertising online and probably internationally so I'm sure to get some more contributions. Please consider putting something in yourself! It would be much appreciated, and what would you have to lose?

Thanks

Eva Marlie

A sneak peek at ...  guinea pigs!

Eva Marlie

Guinea pigs are native to South America , where they are also called cavies. They are classified as rodents, not pigs. A male is called a boar and a female, a sow, though the young are not called piglets, but pups, and a group is called a herd. Guinea pigs are born with their eyes open and all their fur, and can eat solids and run around within a few hours after they are born. There are a few different coat types; smooth, long, and coarse coats all make these little creatures have a unique appearance.

www.thecuteproject.com

If you are looking for a pet that will take up a limited space and doesn’t need walking, then guinea pigs are probably for you, though you need to be sure you can look after your new cuddly being for quite a few years; they normally live between 5-7. If they are socialised with humans from when they are quite young they are affectionate, but because they are rather fragile and small, it is better for them to be looked after by children over 5, though that doesn’t stop the younger ones giving them a gentle pat!
To keep them healthy they need fresh fruit and vegetables, though take note that iceberg lettuce is rather useless (it has hardly any vitamins and has toxins in it that could cause harm); rather give your guinea pigs darker kinds of lettuce. Their front teeth continue to grow, so to keep them short they need pellets to gnaw on. Make sure your guinea pig’s cage doesn’t get too much sun, and make sure it isn’t left in a strong wind. To prevent their toenails curling back up to their soles you will need to trim them.

How pets can reduce stress levels

Eva Marlie

Here I will be looking at the advantages to having pets, apart from just having someone there to play with. I will explore how pets can help people in ways we would never have imagined.

Eva Marlie

What do you think of when you need to relieve some of your stress? Yoga or meditation? Well, I found that having a fuzzy, furry, feathery, or scaly friend really helps to relieve stress! Human friends do help to make you feel better, but your pets do a fine job too, maybe even more than your humans!

www.fanpop.com

Pets improve your mood. Who wants to be practically depressed all the time? There’s nothing more relieving than having a head rub from a cat or a puppy dog stare from a canine.

Okay, imagine this. You are out walking with your furry friend and another person walks past with theirs. The two dogs sniff each other’s bottoms and then you and the other owner get talking. Making new friends is a great way to make yourself feel calm and wanted.

I don’t even think I need to start on loneliness. Who could be a better companion that would be there through all the rough times? Pets are someone who you can talk to and who would never let you go.

www.thementalfitnesscentre.com

If you didn’t have a dog you probably wouldn’t walk as much as someone with a dog. People with dogs would either walk because they know their dog needs the exercise, or they would walk for fun, and their dog would make it more enjoyable. People without dogs would probably not walk as much as someone with a dog.

Several studies have shown that people who own pets have lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Here is a short paragraph I found on www.holisticonline.com:

Research has shown that heart attack victims who have pets live longer. Even watching a tank full of tropical fish may lower blood pressure, at least temporarily. A study of 92 patients hospitalised in coronary care units for angina or heart attack found that those who owned pets were more likely to be alive a year later than those who did not. The study found that only 6 percent of patients who owned pets died within one year compared with 28 percent of those who did not own pets.

I found another very interesting page online about how pets can reduce people’s animal allergies when they get older if they are exposed to pets when they are young. To view the page click here.

And one last thing – getting a pet may save money if you think that it may stop the owner from being hospitalised!

The Adventures of Juniper Silverheel

Part 7

Star (13) & Nova (13)

I stopped completely in midair. I even stopped beating my wings and almost fell. Lux was quite the opposite of what I had expected. He looked like no child fairy I had ever met, and certainly not at all like me. But I saw something in him that reminded me of Elvena, my wife. Something I couldn’t quite put a finger on. Loom tugged my arm;

“Come on. It’s no time to daydream!” she whispered. She pulled me into the cover of an oak tree and we hid amongst the branches, peeping through the leaves. The Abyduses had landed at the base of a mountain, hidden from the view of humans. They started to climb. They were much faster on foot than they were when flying, so we sped up, darting through the leaves. They had probably only flown to keep out of the human’s reach. The humans would have slowed them down if they were on foot and made their progress even slower than flying. Soon Loom called a halt and said:

“We can’t go on like this. We’ve been flying for a day and a night with no food or rest already! Even Kanoko and I are tired. We can track them later. I don’t think they’ll hurt Elvena and Lux or else they would have done so already. For now let’s rest.”

My shoulders sagged. I knew she was right. I just didn’t want to give up.

“Anyway”, said Kanoko cheerfully. “At least we’ve got some information to take back to the Imperial Court .”

“Do you want to know why Lux is so special?” asked Loom.

I looked up and said, “I suppose so”. I was curious and there was nothing else to do.

So we settled down on an oak branch and ate while Loom told the tale.

“I will only tell you what little I know”, said Loom.

“When Lux was born, Elvena was near the border of Nocturna Suppressio. If it had been any other place it would have been fine. It would also have been fine if it was any other child. So it happened that Lux’s magic was far beyond any magic of any fairy ever born or any fairy currently living, apart from him, of course. His birth caused a magical disturbance in the shield, imprisoning the Pravus Elders and the Abyduses, and so caused a crack in it. I don’t know what happened after that, but I’m guessing that the Pravus Elders figures that a fairy of such immense power would be useful, and so sent those two Abyduses to capture Lux.

Recipe

Banana Smoothie

If you like bananas (and if you have a blender or food processor) then this is a great treat and probably the easiest and quickest recipe in the universe. Add protein powder to make it a tasty nutritious meal. This recipe serves two, but obviously you can calculate the amount of ingredients you will need if you have more than two people.

You will need:

2 bananas

2T yoghurt

2 cups fruit juice

Chop up the bananas, then combine all the ingredients in a blender, food processor, or anything that with make it smooth.

Drink and enjoy!

Poem

Love and Life

Tara Rose

I am the word the trees do whisper in the dead of the night,

I am the wind that carries the dove and guides it to take flight,

I am the lonely wolf who howls at the staring moon,

I am the shining sun who smiles down everyday at noon.

What am I? You may ask.

Something that will always last;

Something older than time itself;

The one and only … Love
