Issue 9 - Saturday, 3rd April 2010

Hi Free-Rangers!

The four months of this year have gone past so quickly for me! This issue, apart from the lovely stories and reviews our subscribers have sent in, is filled with funny signs and English mistakes, some very odd indeed. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did putting it together; bet you won't be able to stop laughing!! It really is amazing what can happen in this world, especially without an editor ;)

Have a lovely Easter, and don't stuff yourself with too many eggs!

Eva Marlie

Words of the Month

(couldn't help myself)

porphyrophobia

Fear of the colour purple.

pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoniosis

(Now, there's a word you don't hear every day.)

According to the Oxford English Dictionary a factitious (made-up) word alleged to mean "a lung disease caused by inhalation of very fine silica dust, causing inflammation in the lungs".

The Boat

I looked at the little boat. It looked so small now. It lay exactly where I had left it all those years back. I could remember all the races I had won in this little boat. My father had made it for me. I was happy with my life. But then as I grew things began to change. We moved to a city far away from the clean river of the home which I knew and loved because my father had to find more stable work as the price of things rose. Though I was sad to leave I understood the importance of money and went along with it. Just before we left I went down to the river and took the little boat for one more sail to a secret place only I knew.
Now I looked down at it remembering all these things. Then my son Pete tugged on my hand.

"Papa!"
"Yes", I said.
"Can I go in the boat?”
I smiled.

“Yes of course you can.”
He climbed in and I pushed the boat in the river, wadding beside him as he paddled.

The Horse and the Rider

Star (13)

The waves crash on the side of the cliff where the old house is. It feels as though the house and everything in it will go tumbling into the roaring ocean. Every gust of wind makes the house creak louder and louder. The thunder is a horse charging towards it, carrying its rider of rain with lighting as his sword. He rides over the mountains of water towards you. As the smell of fresh air and salt fills your nose it seems as though there are no walls (guarding against him). The mount and rider together are so huge they make it look like night even though it is day. The only reminder you are in the house is the noise of the creaking walls and the things outside hitting the walls. You can even see the walls leaning in from the beating of the wind. The windows look as though they will shatter at any moment. They are already starting to crack because of the wind blowing the sea water into them. You feel as though the house will collapse into the ocean at any moment. But the wost is yet to come. This is just the dust of the horse’s hooves as it approaches. It is not upon you yet. Let us hope that the house will hold. For you cannot run. The hose is far faster than you. You must stay where you are if you are to have any hope. Any second now...
The horse and rider are upon the little house; huge hooves thundering over its wood roof. The rider’s lightning sword striking so near but not on it.  Then the roof in the hall collapses. It cannot take the pounding of the hooves. Luckily you are in the kitchen. You hear the wind blowing and howling like a hundred wolves on a hunt. It is a dreadful sound along with the thundering hooves and strikes of the sword. You are deafened by the noise. If you ever come out of this you think you will be deaf.
Suddenly it stops. Only sound to be heard is the whooshing of the wind and the banging of the things outside as they do a final tumble. You open the door to the hall. It is a wreck but you are alive and can still hear. The sun merrily shines down as though the horse and rider never came as you start cleaning up.

Things to think about ...

Eva Marlie

If there is an exception to every rule, is there an exception to that rule?

(Thanks to http://www.crazythoughts.com/)

Does a blind person dream? If so, how, and is this for somebody who has been blind only part of their life, or has never been able to see anything? What would a person look like for someone who has never been able to see the real world?
